„Fall to my level, then, and I'll lift you up again” – says Jean, the valet to Miss Julie before the fatal step. Over the course of a midsummer night, while the Count is away, suppressed desires surfice: a young aristocrat and a servant, woman and man start a deadly game. „The fall happens, the lift fails.” Leading figure of swedish naturalism, also described as a misogynist, August Strindberg finished his most played one act work in 1888, Miss Julie. The story of the love triangle between the Count’s daughter, the valet and servant, named Christine, counted too daring and raw that censorship banned the play at first.
László Velekei worked with Miskolc Ballet for the second time. People oriented, deep analysis of the characters’ fate and personality, cause of their acts – these all describe the choreographer’s work. In Miss Julie, he tried to focus on the love triangle and show it from social and personal perspective as well. Human nature – instinct, desire – and the expectation from society, social behaviour norms and statuses crash in the play and in the characters as well.
